﷯ My little sister had an "imaginary friend" inside a handheld game console and it still freaks me out 20 years later [long post sorry] submitted Sept 24, 2013 * by throwaway_82983 Okay so I've been lurking on this sub for a while and I've never posted anything because I've always been a skeptic but this memory has been eating at me lately and I just need to put it somewhere. This would have been around 1993-1994. I was 12, my sister Dana was 6. My mom came home from work one day with this weird little handheld game thing called The Imaginarium. She said someone at her office was doing testing on kids for some educational game company and asked if she'd bring it home for us to try. It looked kind of like a Gameboy but bigger, with a brownish screen. I tried it for maybe 20 minutes. Honestly it was kind of boring to me, there was a princess character that kept popping up. So I gave it to Dana. Big mistake probably. Within a week Dana was OBSESSED. She'd carry it everywhere, talk to it. At first we thought she was just being a little kid, playing pretend. She said she had a friend inside the game. We figured she meant the princess character. Then she started saying her friend was "calling for help." She'd get really distressed, like genuinely upset, not tantrum upset. Real tears. My parents didn't know what to do. Mom called the company whose name I can't remember but she didn't hear back from them. One night I found Dana asleep with the thing clutched to her chest. That's when I got scared. I don't know why exactly, just a deep gut feeling that something was wrong. I took the console out of her hands. She woke up immediately and started crying harder than I've ever seen her cry. It took both my parents an hour to calm her down. I took the console to the garage and smashed it with a hammer. Dana cried for two days. Then she just stopped talking about it. Like she'd forgotten. She's 36 now. Has kids of her own. I've never told her what I did. I feel bad, but like, what if I prevented something worse from happening? 203 comments share save hide report crosspost
